Transcript: Hello,
My name is Sarah Morgenthaler and today I will be demonstrating an instructional video on how a game can be incorporated into a review lesson on the solar system. My target grade for this lesson is second and this lesson in particular will come at the end of our solar system unit. My objectives for this lesson are:
• Students will review the planets in our solar system.
• Students will identify and remember the order of the planets from the Sun.
• Students will have fun and engage in a virtual game of Space Bingo.
For today’s lesson some materials that I will need are:
1. Virtual classroom platform- today I will be utilizing canva’s presentation mode for the recording purposes, however my virtual classroom will actually be held in the ZOOM platform.
2. Space Bingo cards
3. Digital Markers
4. List of planet names and facts
5. Prizes
The beginning of my lesson we will review our previous content on the planets of our solar system. https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/planet-what-is/en/
This link will have already been familiar to the class and already in my students google classroom. I will ask them if they’d like to follow along with me, however I will guide them one last time through some of the main facts of each aspect of our solar system.
Next, students will transition to a general review session. I will pull up a brief matching sheet so students are able to visualize the planets and some of their key facts. This is where most of our content review will take place. Students will use their blue hand to signify that they know an answer. (PDF)
Once I am confident that all students have obtained mastery of the concept I will guide them to the space bingo activity also linked to their google classroom. The rules are as follows:
Each student will receive a digital space bingo card with pictures of the planets and space themed items. I will call out a short definition of a planet or solar system theme, and instruct them to mark their card if they have it. The goal is to get five solar system terms in a row marked either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. I will also let them know a few tips on how to clear chips at the end of each game.
After the game, take a few minutes to review the names of the planets and some interesting facts. Ask students questions like, "Which planet is the closest to the Sun?" or "Which planet is known for its beautiful rings?" This reinforces their knowledge while keeping them engaged.
As an extension of this lesson students will have the ability to play solar system switch a roo on their own devices. Students will need to match all 3 levels of the plant or moon to get the answer correct. This is a fun and an engaging way to show what they know!
Thank you so much for listening to my instructional presentation!
